This is an attempted accident that occurred in Russia on April 25, 2025. A rescuer was climbing using the AWAH Z3-FIRE when his helmet strap was suddenly twisted into the pulley and tightened, putting him at risk of being strangled. Fortunately, colleagues were nearby and cut off the helmet strap within a minute.
The rescuer involved, Maxim Kysilev from Rostov city, described: “When I arrived at him, I had no idea if it was the beards, a necklace, or something else that had been twisted into it. He could only grit his chin and say ‘STRAP!'”
A VENTO brand rope knife hanging on the rescuer’s shoulder strap was used. Due to the high tension, the first strap was cut in an instant, and it took another three seconds to cut the second strap.
Safety Conclusions
- Be especially careful when facing electric tools near your face.
- A rope knife must be sharpened and carried with you at all times — not a kitchen knife, axe, or utility knife, but a rope knife of a size and style suitable for use in dangerous situations with limited space.
- A standby rescuer (someone who can provide assistance) must be nearby during operations — otherwise we don’t know how long the victim has been trapped.
- Industrial helmets should be used instead of sports helmets. Per EN 397-2012+A1-2012 §5.1.4, chin strap anchorages shall release at a force of no less than 150 N and no more than 250 N, due to failure only of the anchorage(s).
- All straps should be stored properly to avoid hooking or twisting into the equipment.
- Workers in the construction team should be experienced and capable, rather than careless. Being on a business trip, working towards the end of a week, or feeling exhausted can make workers more prone to accidents.
